Every successful renovation begins with understanding how a family wants to live. For this Wellesley Colonial, the homeowners envisioned a kitchen that would become the true center of the home—a place where cooking, gathering, entertaining, and everyday routines could comfortably coexist while remaining faithful to the home’s traditional architecture.
Rather than treating the renovation as a standalone kitchen project, Keri Murray Architecture approached the design as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the existing Colonial home and the way the family uses it today.
The result is a bright, expansive kitchen addition filled with natural light, generous workspaces, and carefully crafted architectural details that feel as though they have always belonged.
Large divided-light windows frame views of the landscape while flooding the interior with daylight. A vaulted ceiling introduces volume without overwhelming the traditional proportions of the home, allowing the new space to feel open yet appropriately scaled. Throughout the project, classic detailing—including custom millwork, traditional cabinetry, marble surfaces, and finely proportioned windows—maintains continuity with the original architecture.
At the center of the room, a substantial island provides space for cooking, casual dining, homework, and entertaining, while a built-in breakfast nook creates an inviting destination for daily family gatherings. Adjacent service spaces, including a beautifully detailed beverage station and butler’s pantry, improve functionality while introducing moments of color, texture, and personality.
Outside, the kitchen connects seamlessly to terraces and outdoor living spaces, extending the space beyond its walls and strengthening the home’s relationship to the surrounding property.
Rather than competing with the original Colonial residence, the new work enhances it. Every architectural decision was guided by the homeowners’ priorities, creating spaces that feel timeless, highly functional, and deeply connected to the character of the existing home.
