The historic home addition project was an opportunity to add modern livability to a seminal Colonial Revival style home in Wellesley, MA. The home, known as the Tufts House after its first architect/owner, was lovingly maintained by a young family that wanted to expand the footprint and instill functionality without sacrificing the home’s history or charm.
KMA’s design touched off with a new central kitchen that serves as the home’s hub, infusing light and flow to other introduced spaces including a mudroom, pantry, office, and a second floor den with a dedicated stair. KMA also designed a renovated primary suite with a new en-suite bathroom and access to a second floor private deck.
As with any historic home expansion, incorporation of proper scale, use of architecturally appropriate detailing, and specification of natural materials were integral in preserving the house’s considerable character, and KMA was praised by both the Wellesley Zoning Board and Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) for maintaining the home’s architectural significance.
KMA was deeply honored to work with the homeowners on their historic home addition, and to provide designs for new spaces that serve as a touchstone for a new architectural and familial heritage.
