This colonial home renovation in Newton, MA was designed to improve flow, functionality, and overall cohesion across four levels of the home while preserving its traditional architectural character. Keri Murray Architecture reimagined the interior to better support modern family life, incorporating a dedicated laundry room and mudroom at the lower level, updated built-ins and a redesigned mantel on the first floor, and a more refined primary suite with an integrated office on the upper level.
The project also included updates to the third floor to improve bedroom privacy and renovate the existing bathroom, along with the addition of a front portico and the exploration of an expansion over the veranda. Throughout the home, the design approach focused on introducing a more purposeful layout and a coherent interior aesthetic while maintaining the scale, familiarity, and classic character of the original colonial structure.
Rather than changing the identity of the house, this renovation focused on making the home feel more intentional from within. Each intervention was designed to improve how the spaces connect and function while reinforcing the architectural language of the existing home. The result is a Newton colonial that feels more cohesive, more livable, and more aligned with the needs of contemporary family life.
