Contextual Tudor Home Addition | Wellesley, MA

This Tudor Revival home addition in Wellesley, Massachusetts demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can dramatically expand a historic residence while preserving its distinctive character. Keri Murray Architecture designed a seamless addition that introduces a spacious new kitchen, improved circulation, expanded living areas, and additional lower-level living space, all while carefully respecting the home’s original massing, materials, and architectural vocabulary.

Tudor Revival homes are defined by their steeply pitched roofs, masonry construction, richly detailed windows, and carefully balanced proportions. Expanding these homes requires more than additional square footage—it requires an architectural approach that understands how the original house was composed and how new construction can feel as though it has always belonged.

For this Wellesley residence, Keri Murray Architecture designed a substantial addition that transforms both the interior functionality and the overall livability of the home while remaining visually subordinate to the original Tudor architecture. The new addition increases usable living space across multiple levels, creating a more open and connected floor plan that better supports modern family life.

At the heart of the renovation is a generous kitchen designed for everyday living and entertaining. A large center island anchors the space while custom cabinetry, integrated storage, professional-grade appliances, and carefully proportioned windows bring abundant natural light into the home. The kitchen connects naturally to adjacent living spaces, improving circulation without sacrificing the sense of intimacy often found in traditional Tudor homes.

The project also introduces a new staircase that improves movement throughout the home while incorporating handcrafted wood railings and decorative wrought-iron balusters inspired by traditional Tudor detailing. A new lower-level entrance and finished living areas expand the home’s functionality, while updated bathrooms and utility spaces provide modern comfort with timeless material selections.

Externally, the addition was carefully composed to preserve the home’s architectural integrity. Matching brick masonry, stone detailing, steep roof forms, slate roofing, black divided-light windows, and restrained trim profiles ensure the new construction blends seamlessly with the original residence. The addition respects the existing scale and proportions while creating a home that functions for contemporary living without compromising its historic character.

The result is a thoughtfully integrated Tudor addition that feels original to the property—demonstrating how contextual residential architecture can preserve the identity of a historic home while allowing it to evolve for the next generation.
