Contextual In-Law Addition | Canton, MA

Designed to allow multiple generations to live comfortably under one roof, this thoughtfully integrated in-law addition expands an existing Colonial while maintaining the scale, character, and proportions of the original home. The result is a seamless addition that provides independent living spaces without compromising the home’s architectural integrity.

This thoughtfully designed in-law addition transformed an existing Colonial home into a flexible multigenerational residence while preserving its original architectural character. Rather than appearing as a separate wing, the addition was carefully integrated into the existing home so it reads as though it has always been part of the original design.

Created to provide comfortable, independent living for an extended family member, the addition includes an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area, a spacious bedroom suite, accessible bathroom, dedicated laundry, and abundant natural light throughout. The open floor plan creates a welcoming environment that supports both everyday living and family gatherings while maintaining a sense of privacy and independence.

The custom kitchen features painted cabinetry, quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a generous island that serves as the heart of the living space. Adjacent living and dining areas flow seamlessly together beneath vaulted ceilings, creating bright, comfortable interiors that feel significantly larger than their footprint.

Throughout the project, careful attention was given to accessibility, circulation, and long-term functionality. Single-level living, generous room proportions, and efficient planning ensure the addition can adapt to changing family needs while providing the comfort and independence essential for multigenerational living.

Designed with the same level of architectural detail and craftsmanship found throughout the original residence, the completed addition demonstrates how thoughtful residential architecture can create flexible living arrangements without sacrificing beauty, comfort, or lasting value.

We could not be more pleased with Keri's design and attention to detail in the planning of our addition and in-law apartment. Our home was built in 1890 and Keri perfectly blended the existing architecture to our new construction, paying careful attention to every detail to make the tie-in seamless. Keri's design far surpassed what we originally had in mind.
