This comprehensive renovation and contextual addition transformed a historic American Foursquare into a light-filled family home while preserving the proportions and architectural character that define the original residence. A thoughtfully integrated side addition, expansive wraparound porch, and complete first-floor reconfiguration created generous, connected living spaces that support modern family life without compromising the home’s historic integrity. Throughout the project, traditional detailing, timeless materials, and careful craftsmanship ensure the new work feels as though it has always belonged.
Originally built as a classic American Foursquare, this Winchester residence possessed strong architectural bones but no longer reflected the way a modern family lives. The existing layout was compartmentalized, the kitchen undersized, and the home lacked the open gathering spaces desired by the homeowners.
Keri Murray Architecture designed a contextual addition and whole-house renovation that respects the home’s original massing while dramatically improving its functionality. The new side addition expands the living area without overwhelming the historic structure, while a generous wraparound porch strengthens the home’s relationship to the surrounding neighborhood and landscape.
Inside, the first floor was completely reimagined around an open kitchen, dining, and family room. Custom inset cabinetry, a large painted island, professional-grade appliances, built-in storage, and carefully proportioned millwork create spaces that are equally suited for everyday family life and entertaining. Throughout the home, traditional detailing, warm natural materials, and restrained finishes establish a timeless New England aesthetic that complements the home’s original architecture.
The result is a home that feels both authentic and effortless—a thoughtful evolution of a historic American Foursquare designed for generations to come.
